Ernie Moreno's Pietenpol: tail feathers and gear...

revised November 9, 2001

Landing gear shock struts on the Cub-style main gear.

One of the main gear legs and tire. The brakes are 100% Piper Cub.

And here's the other side.

Tail feathers. I note that the vertical stabilizer brace wires have been installed a bit different from plans. That is, rather than have the two wires attach at the same point at the top, Ernie has spread them and mounted the top of the forward wire near the leading edge of the VS. Hmmm.

Another shot of the tail. Ernie rebuilt these surfaces after he got the plane. He pulled off the fabric, lightened the structure a little here and there, and recovered in Stits HS90X, all to save a little weight. The bird still has some lead in the nose to put it in balance.

A shot of the tailwheel arrangement. It steers off a set of horns attached to the lower rudder. Sixteen years and no problems.

And, to finish things up for Ernie's plane, here is a last, close-up shot of the tailwheel setup.

Wanna take 'er up?
