NX41CC Flying Again

NX41CC Returns to Service!

On Sunday, February 4, 2007 the airplane was found to be airworthy, rigging adjusted, engine running perfectly, and she sat on the apron as you see her here. Conditions were right for final test flights to determine if 41CC was ready for return to service. Test pilot was Charlie Avaritt III, my instructor and airport manager at Zapata County Airport, Texas... where this sequence was shot.

I propped her off for Charlie and here he prepares for taxi out to Runway 12 with nearly no wind. Two other observers: ex helicopter crew chief Jim, who had helped with the wing rigging and was waiting for Super Bowl to begin, and my pit bull Squeaker, who was in the car so she wouldn't wander into a spinning prop. And pay no attention to the minor touch-up painting that still needs to be done on the rudder where I had to repair the horn and the fabric around it. Thanks to Hal King for the rudder horn repairs. And thanks to Dennis at AvGrafix I have some new vinyl letters for the tail numbers, too.

Out the taxiway for the active. We also fixed a small brake fluid leak at a fitting on the starboard side; brakes were at 100% and working nicely. My thanks to Vic Aaron for the help in getting the brakes overhauled and back in service... they are strong and smooth now.

This was Charlie's second circuit. First one was close to the runway to feel the airplane out in ground effect. All good, so up he went into the pattern. The airplane climbs like crazy, even with two aboard. I found this out after Charlie taxied in after this circuit, swapped cockpits with me, and I got my first stick time in a Pietenpol, ever. What a thrill!

Cooling down, engine ticking quietly, mags off, fuel off. The skies of South Texas are once again safe for women and children with 41CC back on patrol.
